About Romania / The People

The People

Apart from the fictitious vampire Dracula and the sadly real Nicolae Ceausescu, some of Romania's best known exponents are:

> Henri Coanda, the inventor of the world's first air-reactive (jet) aircraft in 1910.

> Constantin Brancusi, renowned sculptor regarded as one of the founding figures of modern sculpture. He is the author of the world's two most expensive sculptures ever sold, 'Bird in Space' sold for $27,456,000 at Christie's New York in May 2005 and 'Danaide', sold for $18,100,000 in May 2002.

> Angela Gheorghiu, famous soprano and a favourite at Covent Garden's Royal Opera House.

> George Palade, 1974 Nobel Laureate in Medicine for discoveries concerning the structural and functional organization of the cell.

> Nadia Comaneci, gymnastics legend, the first ever gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event. She repeated this exceptional performance six more times in her career.
